Character Name Generator

A character name is a promise about a person. Filter by genre, keep the convention, read the receipt. Every preset here speaks a documented naming grammar, and every name comes with a receipt: parts, meaning, tradition.

How does the character name generator work?

Pick a preset, set your filters, generate, read the receipt. Four steps:

  1. Pick the genre preset: Fantasy, Norse-style, Japanese or Modern real. The pill switches the naming pools and the tradition line.
  2. Set a gender if the character has one. Leave it on any to mix the pools.
  3. Press Generate. Quantity 10 draws a whole cast in one pass.
  4. Read the receipt: every chip is one name part with its meaning, and the tradition line names the convention.

Where are the syllable filters? On the name itself, as chips. The middle slot is the length lever: a draw without it runs two parts and reads short, a draw with it runs three parts and reads fuller. Tap any chip to swap one part and change the syllable count without losing the name. Is it free? Yes, no signup, no limit.

How do character names work?

Every character name follows a convention, and the convention is the craft. Elvish-style names are compounds: Thalwen parses as thal (forest) + wen(maiden), so the name means forest maiden before anyone speaks. Old Norse names stack two documented elements: Sigbrand is sig (victory) + brand (sword). Japanese names carry meaning in kanji: Haruto is 陽 (sun) + 斗 (Big Dipper). Modern names inherit real Germanic and English morphology: Godric is god (good) + ric(ruler).

One generator cannot fake all four with a syllable bag, so this one speaks them as presets, one tradition per draw, and says which. The full method, worked example by worked example, lives on the how to name a character page: the walkthrough this tool implements.

What is a good character name?

A good character name survives three tests at once: it fits the world, it parses, and it reads well out loud. Ten names below, one receipt each, spanning the four presets. Six are generator builds you can reproduce above; four are documented real names the modern and Norse presets draw their parts from.

Good character names with their builds, meanings and traditions

Names for characters carry one more job than names for anything else: they get said out loud by other people, in dialogue, for hundreds of pages. Test accordingly. The full walkthrough lives at how to name a character.

What are female character names?

Female names across these traditions lean on marked suffixes: -wen and -iel in the elvish set, -hild and -dottir in the Norse set, flower and light kanji in the Japanese set. Eight with receipts:

Female character names with their builds and meanings
NameBuilt fromMeaning
Aelwenael + wenmaiden of light
Sylwensyl + wenmaiden of the shadow-wood
Nimrielnim + rielwhite-crowned maiden
Galthildgal + hildradiance in battle
Ivelnieivel + niesilver and gentle
Rosamundrose + mundrose guardian
Yuki雪 (snow)snow
Mirwenmir + wenmaiden of the jewel

What are male character names?

Male names lean the other way: -ion and -dir in the elvish set, -geir and -fast in the Norse set, -ro and -shi endings in the Japanese set. Same grammar, different role markers:

Male character names with their builds and meanings
NameBuilt fromMeaning
Elarionel + ar + ionson of the star-noble
Thalionthal + ionson of the forest
Sigfastsig + fastfirm in victory
Thorsteinthor + steinThor-stone
Godwingod + wingood friend
Haruto陽 + 斗sun and the Dipper
Randricrand + ricshield-ruler
Osbertos + bertbright of god

How do female and male character names differ?

By suffix, not by root. Most traditions here share one root pool between genders and split at the ending, which is why the gender filter swaps the last chip and leaves the first ones alone:

How female and male character names differ by tradition
AttributeFemale namesMale names
Elvish-style endingswen, iel, driel, rielion, dir, las, we
Old Norse endingshild, dottirgeir, fast, grim, son
Japanese endingsko, mi, ne endingsro, shi, to endings

Old Norse is the clearest case: -dottir and -son literally mean daughter of and son of. The gender lives in the grammar, not in the sound.

Character names versus NPC names

Same conventions, different job. A character name carries a full morphology a reader will parse for chapters. An NPC name carries a station tag a game table needs in one second. Neighbors, not rivals:

The signal test: what does a name say before anyone speaks?

A name is the first line of characterization, and readers parse it before the first line of dialogue. That is the signal test: ask what the name alone tells a reader who knows nothing else. A name with hard consonants and closed syllables signals a blunt instrument of a person. A name with liquids and long vowels signals patience or danger of the patient kind. A name that parses in the world's own morphology signals a native; a name bolted on from another genre signals an outsider, whether you meant it or not. The receipt makes the signal checkable: if the parts say grief and the character is comic relief, the name is lying about its own person.

What character names signal, with receipts
NameSignal before the first lineWhy
Godrica decent man with authoritygood + ruler, real Germanic build
Thalwenquiet, probably rural, probably kindforest + maiden, soft compound
Sigbranda soldier, not a diplomatvictory + sword, both blunt
Galthilda fighter with a luminous streakradiance + battle
Wilfred the Innkeepa station you can walk toresolute + peace, plus a job

This test is one of four in the full framework. The character naming guide teaches all four: meaning, sound, culture cue, signal. That is how you pick the right name, not just a name.

Character name generator questions, answered

What is my character name?

The one you can defend out loud, and the generator gets you there in three draws. Pick the genre preset that matches your world, set a gender if the character has one, and generate a batch of ten. Cut any name whose meaning does not fit the character, say the survivors three times fast, and keep the one still standing. Every draw shows its parts, so you are choosing a build, not a sound.

Is the generator accurate to real naming traditions?

Yes, and it says which tradition each preset speaks. The Japanese preset draws real kanji with documented readings. The Norse and modern presets use documented name elements from Old Norse and English sources. The fantasy preset is invented, built to sound like a real elvish compound grammar, and the tradition line says invented on every draw. The label is the honesty system.

Can I get Japanese character names only?

Yes, switch the preset to Japanese. Every draw is then a kanji given name with its reading, its characters and their meanings on the receipt. For full Japanese names with the surname first, use the Japanese name generator, which owns that convention end to end.

How do I pick a character name?

Run the four tests: world, role, sound, meaning. Check the world: the name must plausibly come from it. Check the role: a scout and a warlord cannot share a register. Say it out loud three times. Read the receipt and keep only names whose parts you can defend. The how to name a character walkthrough teaches all four with worked examples.

Where this data comes from. Presets reuse the site's live datasets verbatim: kanji pools from the Japanese tool, Old Norse and Germanic elements from the documented name-element references, elvish compounds from the elf tool's labeled pool. The Norse element pool extends the live random tool's roots with additional documented Old Norse name elements. Invented builds say invented. Where every name's receipt comes from →
