Check before you register. A generated or listed name is not trademark-cleared, not company-name-cleared and not guaranteed unique. If a name will appear on a product, a business or a domain, search the relevant registers first. For the United States, start with theUSPTO trademark search. For companies and domains, check your local company register and a registrar.
Baby names: meanings are glosses from published sources, and scholarship sometimes disagrees with itself. Contested etymologies are marked contested in the row. Confirm anything that matters with a naming dictionary.
Invented means invented
Labeled honestly, always. Some tools build names in the style of a tradition that has no source corpus, such as elvish compounds. Those results carry an invented or folklore-inspired label on the receipt. Real attested names carry their tradition. The methodology page says which is which, tool by tool.
Errors are possible. Glosses come from published glossaries, census lists and community-documented conventions, and a row can still be wrong. Send corrections to the contact page; fixed rows get fixed.
