What do dragon names mean?

Dragon names mean exactly what their parts say. The element is the claim; the title is the receipt. Twelve meaning spotlights, canon and invented side by side:

How do dragon names work?

Element root, optional ending, title epithet. Pyr (fire) + ax + the Golden = Pyrax the Golden. Myth runs the same grammar with older parts: Tiamat is the sea itself, named in her own epic. The full lesson for the grid lives on the how elvish names work page; this is the dragon chapter.

What are dragon last names?

Dragons carry lineage names instead of surnames. The line of descent or the hoard's seat stands in for a family name, because a dragon outlives any family. Six, decomposed:

Dragon lineage names with their builds and lineage senses
Lineage nameBuilt fromLineage sense
of the First-Fire linethe First-Fire (title) + linedescended from the oldest flame
of the Ashborn linethe Ashborn (title) + linehatched from a burned city
of the Golden Hoardthe Golden (title) + hoardkeeper of the first gold

of the Storm Linethe Storm-Swallower (title) + linetempest-drinkers by descent
of the Bone Courtthe Bone-Crowned (title) + courtcrowned in the dead of the field

Title versus true name

Every strong dragon carries two names. The title travels ahead of the dragon and does the scaring. The true name is the inner one, and the strong canons treat it as the handle of power. Earthsea's dragons speak theirs; Skyrim's dragons are theirs. Pick the right name by deciding which of the two you are writing:

Title versus true name in documented canons

Dragon name questions, answered

What are female dragon names?

Female dragon names lean on moon, sea and star elements. Tiamat, the sea-mother of dragons, is the oldest receipt. The grammar has no gendered endings: element plus title does the work, so Soluna the Sun-Eater and Thalunth the Deep-Dweller read female to most readers. Twelve are tabled above; the generator builds them the same way.

Can dragon names be short?

Yes. Myth keeps most of them to two or three syllables. Fafnir, Python, Vritra, Zilant: the attested set is short because epics favor names a teller can say fast. Length lives in the title instead, and the title is optional in the generator.

Are dragon names real words?

Some are, with sources. Tiamat is the salt sea in her own epic. Draco is plain Latin for dragon. Zhulong is the torch dragon of Chinese myth. The invented builds are labeled invented on every row, so you always know which lane you are reading.

Where the meanings come from. Canon and myth rows name their sources: epics, sagas, and the books in each tradition cell. Invented builds say invented on the same line. Where every name's receipt comes from →
