How does the drow name generator work?
Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: given name, house name, or the full styling. Set a gender too, if you want one. Press Generate. Tap the receipt: each chip is one part with its source note, and tapping a chip swaps only that part. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.
Is this the real naming system? The documented parts, yes. The houses and the given names trace to published Forgotten Realms sources. A draw like Xorlarrin Vyerith is a new combination on documented parts, and the label keeps that line honest. See the full list with meanings on the drow names page.
How do drow names work?
Drizzt = Driz (from Drizzt, published) + zt (close). Sharp root, clipped close. Add the house and the name is complete: the everyday order runs given name first, house second.
The sounds mark the culture. Where high elvish glides, drow names snap: z, x, k at the seams. The female names run longer and more elaborate, which fits the documented order of things: women hold the houses. For the elvish compound grammar the whole race grid shares, the how elvish names work page carries the full lesson.
What is a good drow name?

How do female and male drow names differ?
In the close, in the length, and in what the name inherits. Female names run longer and carry the house forward. Male names clip shorter and hold no claim:
Female versus male drow name conventions| Attribute | Female names | Male names |
|---|
| Typical closes | -na, -thel, -el, -ice, -za | -zt, -in, -mph, -trag, -zen |
| Typical length | 2 to 3 syllables | 1 to 2 syllables |
| Published parallels | Vierna, Quenthel, Liriel | Drizzt, Dinin, Gromph |
| House standing | inherits and rules | carries, does not rule |
Can a drow name be unisex? Rarely, and the culture would notice. The any-gender setting mixes both close pools for table use.
What are drow last names?
The house name, and it is rank as much as family. Six documented Menzoberranzan houses, each used whole:
Drow house names with their documented status| House | Status | Lineage note |
|---|
| Baenre | documented | First House of Menzoberranzan, the ruling house |
| Do’Urden | documented | House Daermon N’a’shezbaernon, the fallen tenth house |
| Barrison Del’Armgo | documented | the Second House, sword-line of the city |
| Xorlarrin | documented | the mage house, wizards of the city |
| Faen Tlabbar | documented | a mid-rank house of the city |
| Melarn | documented | a mid-rank house of the city |
For the broader elvish house-name pattern, the elf name generator carries the surname mode.
Matron-house lineages
A drow house name runs through the mothers, and the paper trail proves it. The Matron Mother holds the house. Her daughters inherit it. Her sons wear it and defend it, but the line never passes through them. That is why the female names run longer: they carry the institution, not just the person. Published lore gives the receipt in full: House Do'Urden stood while Malice stood, and when her line fell the house fell with it, rank and name both. Build a character from that logic and the name does half the writing. Ask which daughter of which matron, and the receipt tells you where the knives are. That is how you pick the right name here: read the lineage, then the blade.
How a drow house line passes, per documented lore| Relation | Carries the name | Can rule the house |
|---|
| Matron Mother | yes | yes, by definition |
| Daughters | yes | yes, in order of standing |
| Sons | yes | no, documented rule |
| Houseless drow | no house name | may serve a house as a blade |
Drow names vs dark elf names
One is a documented people; the other is a dialect of a style. Drow names cite houses and printed pages. Dark elf names build the same sharp sound without the canon. Neighbors, not rivals:
Drow versus dark elf naming| Attribute | Drow names | Dark elf names |
|---|
| Source class | published FR houses and names | harsher-consonant elvish dialect build |
| Core pattern | sharp root + close + house | shadow root + role suffix |
| Second name | documented house, always | house-style build, optional |
| Examples | Quenthel Baenre | Morynath-class builds |
The dark elf name generator builds the dialect side, Underdark phonology without the canon houses.
Rare drow names
Rare means the deep-drawer openers and the fallen houses. Four houses in the bank are flagged uncommon, and a few closes barely see print:
Rare drow names with their builds and sources| Name | Built from | Meaning |
|---|
| Shakti Hun’ett | Shak + ti (published whole), House Hun’ett | Shakti of House Hun’ett |
| Sosna Oblodra | Sos + na, House Oblodra | Sosna of House Oblodra |
| Drizys Mizzrym | Driz + ys, House Mizzrym | Drizys of House Mizzrym |
| Zakax Fey-Branche | Zak + ax, House Fey-Branche | Zakax of House Fey-Branche |
| Vyerir Hun’ett | Vyer + ir, House Hun’ett | Vyerir of House Hun’ett |
| Triax Barrison Del’Armgo | Tri + ax, House Barrison Del’Armgo | Triax of the Second House |

Drow name generator questions, answered
What is my drow name?
The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode: given name, house name, or the full matron-line styling. Set a gender too, if you want one. Generate, then read the receipt: the parts, the house, and the convention it follows. That is a name you picked with your eyes open.
Is the generator accurate to real drow naming?
Yes, because the drow are a documented people. Published Forgotten Realms fiction and sourcebooks record the houses, the given names, and the matriarchal line the names follow. The openers and closes here trace to those published names. A fresh combination is labeled a site build, never a fake citation.
Can I get house names only?
Yes. Switch to house mode and every draw is a documented Menzoberranzan house, used whole. The drow names list tables the houses with their documented notes.
How do drow house names work?
A house is a matrilineal noble line, and the name is political property. The Matron Mother holds the house; her daughters carry it forward; sons carry it too, but hold no claim to rule it. Published lore records House Do'Urden falling when its matron line fell, which is the receipt for how the system works.
