How do female Japanese names work?

Feminine names mark gender with ending morphemes and softer kanji families, and the -ko suffix is quietly retiring. Sakura is 桜 (cherry blossom) standing alone; Hana is 花 (flower) alone: no suffix, the nature kanji doing all the work.

The endings, one example each: -ko "child" (Aiko), -mi"beauty" (Emi), -ka scent or flower (Kanae), -na nature greens (Hina). And the fifth family is no suffix at all (Sakura, Hana, Kasumi). That drift is the story of the last two generations: the current top names carry no -ko, while the classic set (Aiko, Fumiko, Yoko) does. The table shows it plainly.

The system underneath is tabled at Japanese names and their meanings.

What do Japanese female names mean?

Flower, moon, light, love, beauty: the feminine kanji families, one receipt per name. The ending changes what the name asserts: -ko says "child of" what comes before it, and -mi folds "beauty" into the claim itself. Grouped by family:

What Japanese female names mean moon or flower?

Moon and flower names are character choices, made on purpose: 美 + 月 in Mizuki, 桜 standing alone in Sakura. The moon table matches the meanings page's moon set word for word; the flower set keeps to attested floral kanji (Sumire in, and 凛 Rin is out: it means "dignified," not floral; precision over vibes).

The 月 set: same wording as the meanings page's moon asset.

What are Japanese last names for female characters?

Surnames are gender-neutral in Japan. "Female last name" means the names that read well on a female character, and the kanji tells you why. Every surname below is real; the right-hand column is the read.

What are Japanese names to call your girlfriend?

Name-shaped endearments, with their literal meanings: the diminutive -chan, the classic floral names, and what each one actually says. Register notes stay factual: these are casual and affectionate in tone, the way a diminutive works in any language.

Japanese endearment terms with literal meanings and register
TermLiteral meaningRegister
-chan (ちゃん)the diminutive: "little" attached to a namecasual, affectionate
Hana-chan (花ちゃん)"little flower": Hana + the diminutivecasual, affectionate
Yuki-chan (雪ちゃん)"little snow": Yuki + the diminutivecasual, affectionate

One sentence of scope: diminutives and classic endearments, the name-shaped ones; phrases aren't names. When two names need to become one, the couple name generator does the merging.

Japanese female name questions, answered

Is -ko only for female names?

No: skewed, not exclusive. -ko is heavily female today but has historical male usage; -mi and -ka are female-dominant. The ending is a strong tell, and the kanji is the deciding receipt.

What is a rare Japanese female name?

Shizuku 雫 ('droplet') and Tsukiko 月子 ('moon child'): uncommon kanji choices that still read naturally. Rarity in Japanese names is usually a kanji choice, not an invented sound.

What female Japanese name means dark?

Kage 影 ('shadow'), Yoru 夜 ('night'), An 暗 ('dark'): all genuinely rare in real given names, and flagged that way in our tables. For names that carry dark elegance while staying common, the moon set is the honest route.
