How do Star Wars names work?

Darth Vader reads as dark plus father. That is the sound-symbolism George Lucas built the saga on, and he has said as much in interviews: the dark side gets dark-sounding names. The galaxy runs on audible morality. Sidious leans on insidious. Tyrannus on tyrant. Plagueis on plague. Maul needs no help at all.

Then the registers split. Humans carry plain given names, Luke, Han, Leia, under folk-compound surnames like Skywalker, a name that is literally an occupation, the same way Smith is. Han Solo carries a word for a surname, alone, which is the whole character. Aliens carry apostrophes and unfamiliar syllable shapes that signal a language you do not speak. How do the species conventions differ?

Five registers, five jobs. The table is the system in one view. What a name is shaped like tells you what it belongs to before anyone explains:

The registers never mix by accident in the films. A Darth never carries a designation. A droid never carries an apostrophe. Pick your register first.

What are Star Wars last names?

The apostrophe rule

The apostrophe says: this name came from a language you do not speak. That is the whole rule, and the saga states it structurally rather than in dialogue. Twi'lek, the species name itself, carries one. The Chiss carry the deepest documented version: Mitth'raw'nuruodo, the full name of Thrawn, is family, core, and ending joined by apostrophes, and Basic speakers shorten it because they cannot comfortably say the whole thing. The name is a grammar lesson in three syllable groups:
