Wizard Name Generator
Wizard names run on Latin roots and earned epithets. Albus means white. Severus means strict. Every name below builds the same way, and every receipt shows the parts, the meaning and the tradition.
How does the wizard name generator work?
Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: Latin roots with epithets, or canon receipts. Press Generate. Read the receipt: each chip is one part with its meaning, and tapping a chip swaps only that part. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist while the ink dries.
Are these real wizard names? The grammar is the real convention; canon mode is attested. Latin mode builds new names on documented roots, labeled constructed. Canon mode draws named wizards with their sources. The full table lives on the wizard names page.
How do wizard names work?
Magus the Grey = mag (mage, from magus) + us (Latin name-ending) + the Grey (epithet). That pattern is the whole trick. A wizard name carries a root of learning, a Latin shape, and a rank the world gave him. The root says the discipline. The epithet says the reputation. Latin supplies the gravitas, because Latin is what the medieval wizard actually wrote in.
The receipts are the best part of this tradition. Gandalf is attested in the Poetic Edda's dwarf list, a name meaning wand-elf, and Tolkien borrowed it whole. Albus is plain Latin for white, worn by the greatest wizard of the modern canon, and Dumbledore is an English dialect word for bumblebee. The historical magi kept the same machine: Paracelsus is a pen-name meaning beyond Celsus, a rival's name worn as a boast. Read one receipt and every wizard name parses. The craft lesson lives on the how to name a character page; this is the wizard chapter.
What is a good wizard name?
A good wizard name has a root of learning and an epithet the world earned him. Drop the epithet and he is a schoolmaster. Keep it and he is weather. Here is what wizard names mean, part by part: ten names, the first six generator builds, the rest attested with sources named.

What are female wizard names?

| Lumina the Quiet | lumen (light) + ina + title | light-bearing and unspoken |
| Umbrina the Unseen | umbr (shadow) + ina + title | shadow-passer, unnoticed |
| Verba the Word-Keeper | verb (word) + a + title | word-keeper of the charm-craft |
| Eskarina Smith | attested whole | the first female wizard of Equal Rites |

How do wizard names differ across registers?
The root names the discipline; the register names the world. The same man is Magus at the academy, the Grey on the road, and something unprintable at home. Three registers, one wizard:
Wizard name registers| Attribute | The Latin name | The epithet | The use-name |
|---|
| Who uses it | colleagues, documents | the world at large | friends, family |
| Builds from | root + ending | deed or rank | given name |
| Example | Arcanius | the Stormcrow | Radagast, by his own use |
| Tone | formal | legendary | human |
What are wizard title conventions?
Epithets are ranks the world votes on. No one styles themselves the Grey. The world does it after watching. Six from the bank, with their grammar:
Wizard epithets with their rank senses| Epithet | What it marks | Receipt |
|---|
| the Grey | service under an old order | Gandalf the Grey, documented |
| the White | elevation, authority | the promotion the canon records |
| the Wise | counsel given and taken | the counselor class of the canons |
| the Stormcrow | ill news arriving anyway | Gandalf's byname, documented |
| of the Tower | a fixed seat of study | the tower-bound scholar figure |
| of the Ninth Circle | rank of mastery in the game convention | the spell-circle ladder, documented game lore |
The epithet convention
Gandalf-class epithets are earned, never claimed. The Grey arrives after service. The White arrives after the fall of a greater name. The Stormcrow arrives when nobody wanted the news. An epithet is the world's receipt for a wizard's career, and the strong canons treat it as a plot beat: the name change marks the rank change.
The historical record runs the same way. Paracelsus named himself beyond Celsus, and the world kept the boast. The D&D tradition made the ladder formal: Mordenkainen, Bigby and Tenser are wizards whose names became spell names, the epithet system turned into a canon of its own. Pick the right name for your wizard by deciding what the world calls him when he is not in the room.
Epithet ranks with canon receipts| Rank | Holder | How the canon says it was earned |
|---|
| the Grey | Gandalf | centuries of quiet service |
| the White | Gandalf, later | return after the fall |
| the Brown | Radagast | the nature-keeping order |
| headmaster | Albus Dumbledore | office, not epithet, worn like one |
Wizard vs witch names
Neighbors, not rivals. Wizard names run on Latin roots and library gravitas. Witch names run on herbs and boundaries, the hedgerow register. The two traditions name different crafts, and the receipts stay separate on purpose.
Wizard names versus witch names| Attribute | Wizard | Witch |
|---|
| Core morpheme | Latin root + epithet | herb + boundary epithet |
| Register | learned, Latin | folk, local |
| Example | Arcanius of the Tower | Rowan of the Crossroads |
| Canon receipt | Gandalf, wand-elf | Greymalkin, the named cat |
The witch name generator builds the other tradition, folklore receipts included.
The Latin root receipts
Every root in the bank is real Latin with a real sense. That is the citation asset of this page: the glosses are dictionary senses, not vibes. Albus gave the modern canon its white wizard. Severus gave it a strict one. Draco is literally dragon, and the canon wore it as a surname of the worst house:
Latin roots with dictionary senses and canon uses| Root | Latin sense | Canon receipt |
|---|
| albus | white, pale | Albus Dumbledore, the white wizard |
| severus | strict, severe | Severus Snape, the strict master |
| draco | dragon, serpent | the surname of the dragon house |
| lucius | light | the name of that house's father |
| magus | mage, learned man | the Magi of the nativity account |
| arcanum | hidden thing, secret | the arcana of the card tradition |
Wizard name generator questions, answered
What is my wizard name?
The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode, press Generate, and read the receipt. Latin mode pairs a documented Latin root with a name-ending and an epithet. Canon mode draws attested wizard names with their sources named, Merlin to Mordenkainen.
Is the generator accurate to real wizard naming?
Yes, the convention is documented literary practice. Merlin, Albus, Severus and Prospero come from real texts, and the Latin glosses are real Latin. The new pairings follow the same grammar and the tradition line says which builds are constructed.
Can I get canon wizard names only?
Yes, switch to Canon receipts mode. Every draw is an attested name with its source: Gandalf from the Old Norse dwarf list, Dumbledore from the dialect word for bumblebee. The wizard names page carries the full table.
What are female wizard names?
Same Latin grammar; the canon supplies the receipts. Eskarina Smith of Equal Rites is the documented female wizard, and Yennefer of Vengerberg the sorceress. Latin mode has no gendered endings, so Magra the Wise reads either way; the epithet does the work.
Where this data comes from. Latin senses are dictionary glosses; canon and historical names carry their sources, from the Edda's dwarf list to the Elizabethan magus. Constructed builds say constructed. Every name comes with a receipt. Where every name's receipt comes from →
