City Names

City names record why people gathered. Millford is "the river crossing at the mill": mill (the trade) + ford (the site). Here are names for cities with their parts on the table: 156 of them, trade roots and settlement suffixes, six real cities included, each row carrying its receipt.

What are city names?

One trade root plus one settlement suffix, joined. Every generated row here passes the trade-plus-suffix criterion: the root names the economy that sustained the place, and the suffix names the site that sheltered it, with the suffix's real receipt in the tradition column. The last six rows are attested cities. Names bold, glosses italic, nothing between the rows.

How do city names work?

Bind a trade to a site word. Oxford is ox plus ford, a ford for driving oxen across. Woolwich is wool plus wic, a wool trading place. The suffix is doing the archaeology: chester and caster mark Roman forts from Latin castrum, minster marks a monastery church, mouth marks a river meeting the sea, burgh marks a defended town. Real English cities were named by this system for a thousand years, so a fantasy map built on it reads as settled rather than invented. The naming craft behind it is taught on the how to name a character page, in its worldbuilding section.

Real cities, decomposed

Six attested cities, parsed with the same grammar this list uses. Each suffix is doing different work: a crossing, a bridge, a trade, a church, a river mouth, a castle. That spread is the toolkit.

City name questions, answered

What are good city name ideas?

One trade plus one site, and check the receipt parses. Millford, "the river crossing at the mill," works because a mill needs a crossing. Spiceminster, "monastery settlement of the spice market," works because monasteries ran markets. If the trade and the suffix cannot coexist, the name reads wrong even when it sounds fine.

Are these city names real?

Six rows are real cities, and they say so. Oxford, Cambridge, Woolwich, Westminster, Plymouth, and Newcastle are attested with their decompositions. Every other row is a build from the same documented morphology, with its suffix receipt named in the tradition column.

What makes a name sound like a city?

A city-scale suffix: ford, burg, chester, minster, port, haven, mouth. These are the words that recorded crossings, forts, monasteries, and harbors, the four things that gathered people at scale. Farm-scale suffixes like thorpe and combe do the opposite: they shrink the name. Build your own in the generator.

Where the meanings come from. Settlement suffix glosses follow published English place-name scholarship; every receipt example (Oxford, Manchester, Westminster, Plymouth, Canterbury) is a real attested toponym. Trade-root builds are ours, built on that documented system. Where every name's receipt comes from →
