How do fairy names work?

Flower root, optional light word, soft suffix. Ros + bloom = Rosbloom. Ivy + moon + cap = Ivymooncap. That is the whole grammar, both sets. The compound-name lesson the race grid shares lives on the how elvish names work page.

What are fairy last names?

Mostly there are none; folklore gives titles instead. The second-name conventions, status attached:

Soft phonology

Fairy names sound small because the mouth is imitating something tiny. Say Grimgor, then say Dewbell. The first fills the chest; the second sits on the tongue tip. That is a real, checkable sound pattern, not a vibe: liquids and nasals flow without effort, open syllables end in vowels and keep the name light, and hard clusters like -str- and -grk- appear nowhere on this page. The documented canon keeps the rule too: Titania glides where a goblin name pops. The trickster set bends it once, because mischief needs a snap, but even Puck is one soft syllable with a single k at the end. Test any name below the same way: say it three times fast. If it fits in a cupped hand, it passes.

Fairy name questions, answered

What is a rare fairy name?

A trickster build, or a petal name with no suffix. Puckwick and Nixwisp draw from the mischief set, which shows up rarely on purpose. Rosglim and Petalume end on the light word with no suffix at all, a shape the generator draws less often. Rare here still means soft sounds, receipts attached.

Can fairy names be short?

Yes: root plus light word is a complete name. Petalume. Puck alone is shorter still, and it is documented canon. The grammar is smallness, not length; two soft morphemes carry a whole fairy.

What are dark fairy names?

The trickster register with the lights turned down. Thorn, Bramble, Moth and Cob roots instead of petal and gleam: the same soft sounds, the mischief pointed your way. Folklore's will-o'-the-wisp is the model, a light that leads you off the path. The trickster rows in the table above carry that register.

Where the meanings come from. Canon names and their receipts trace to published sources: Barrie for Tinker Bell, Shakespeare for Puck and Titania. The compounds on this page are site builds in the folk register, labeled invented on every row. Where every name's receipt comes from →
