Fairy Name Generator

Fairy names are small on purpose. Dewbell is dew + bell: two soft words, no hard edges. The petal set builds them from flowers and light; the trickster set builds them from mischief. Both receipts are below.

How does the fairy name generator work?

Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a set: petal-and-light, or trickster. Set a gender too, if you want one. Press Generate. Tap the receipt: each chip is one morpheme with its meaning, and tapping a chip swaps only that part. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.

Are these real fairy names? The famous ones are; these compounds are builds. Tinker Bell and Puck are documented canon. Petalume is a site build in the folk register, honestly labeled. See the full list with meanings on the fairy names page.

How do fairy names work?

Roswing = Ros (rose) + wing (of the wing). That is the whole grammar: a nature word plus a soft close.

The petal set stacks a flower root, an optional light word, and a diminutive suffix: Peta + lume is a complete build, or Ivy + moon + cap for a three-part one. The trickster set swaps the garden for the hedgerow: Puck, Nix, Wisp, Cob. Both sets keep the same sound rule, and it is the one sound rule that matters: no hard consonant clusters. For the compound grammar the race grid shares, the how elvish names work page carries the full lesson.

What is a good fairy name?

A good fairy name fits in a cupped hand. Two or three soft morphemes, all of them garden words, none of them sharp. Here is what fairy names mean, part by part: ten names with builds and traditions. Canon rows carry canon receipts; the compounds carry the invented label.

What are female fairy names?

Female-marked draws close on -bell, -dew, -bloom and -glee. Every row decomposes:

How do female and male fairy names differ?

Only in the close. Flower and light roots are shared property; the suffix carries the gender tag:

Can a fairy name be unisex? Most are. The -wing and -song closes carry no gender, and the any-gender setting mixes everything.

What are fairy last names?

Mostly they do not have them. Folklore gives fairies titles and descriptors instead of surnames, and the one famous exception is a trade word:

Small-name phonology

Fairy names avoid hard consonants because the mouth is imitating something tiny. Say Grimgor out loud, then say Dewbell. The first fills the chest; the second sits on the tongue tip. That is the whole trick, and it is a real sound pattern: liquids and nasals (l, m, n, r), open syllables that end in vowels, and no clusters like -str- or -grk-. The documented canon keeps the rule too: Titania glides where a goblin name would pop. Our trickster set bends it slightly, because mischief needs a snap, but even Puck is one soft syllable with a k at the end, not a pile of them. Build to the rule, then say the name out loud three times. That is how you pick the right name here: if it fits in a cupped hand, it is a fairy name.

Fairy names vs elf names

Cousin traditions with different addresses. Elf names carry lineage suffixes and full compound grammar. Fairy names stay small and garden-scale. Neighbors, not rivals:

The elf name generator builds the full compound tradition with role suffixes.

Rare fairy names

Rare means the trickster drawer. The mischief set draws less often than the petal set, which is fitting: you should meet a trickster rarely:

CobtangleCob + tanglecobweb, a tangle

Both sets, petal and trickster, are tabled with receipts on the fairy names list.

Fairy name generator questions, answered

What is my fairy name?

The generator answers that directly. Pick a set: petal-and-light or trickster. Set a gender too, if you want one. Generate, then read the receipt: the parts, the meaning, and the set it follows. That is a name you picked with your eyes open.

Is the generator accurate to real fairy naming?

The famous ones are documented; the compounds are invented, and labeled. Tinker Bell, Puck and Titania are canon with real receipts. The petal-and-light compounds are this site's builds in the folk register: they follow the documented soft-sound habit, and the label never claims a source they do not have.

Can I get trickster fairy names only?

Yes. Switch to the trickster set and every draw uses the mischief roots: Puck, Nix, Wisp-class. The fairy names list tables both sets with receipts.

What are dark fairy names?

The trickster register with the lights turned down. Thorn, Bramble, Moth and Cob roots instead of petal and gleam: the same soft sounds, the mischief pointed your way. Folklore's will-o'-the-wisp is the model, a light that leads you off the path.

Where this data comes from. Canon names and their receipts trace to published sources: Barrie for Tinker Bell, Shakespeare for Puck and Titania. The petal-and-light compounds are this site's builds in the folk register, labeled invented on every row. Where every name's receipt comes from →
