Goblin Name Generator

Goblins name like they tinker: fast, loud, out of spare parts. Zikbolt is "quick-tongued one of the bolt": zik + bolt. Every name below builds the same way, and every receipt shows the parts.

How does the goblin name generator work?

Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: scrap-metal compounds or warren nicknames. Set a gender too, if you want one. Press Generate. Tap the receipt: each chip is one morpheme with its meaning, and tapping a chip swaps only that part. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.

Is this a real goblin tradition? No, and the label says so. The convention is invented: snapping consonants joined to scrap nouns. It is built to read like the short names in published game tables, not to claim a source no one has. See the full list with meanings on the goblin names page.

How do goblin names work?

Grubit = grub (digger) + it (little one). That pattern is the whole trick. A goblin name is a snap root, sometimes a scrap noun, and a clipped close.

The sounds do half the work. Goblins get snapping consonants: k, g, z, k again. Where elves glide on l and r, a goblin name pops. The second element comes from the scrap pile: bolt, cog, shard, wire. The close is a diminutive, and that is where gender lives if you want it. The generator does not shuffle letters; it speaks the grammar. For the compound-name grammar every race tool shares, the how elvish names work page is the full lesson.

What is a good goblin name?

A good goblin name is short, sayable, and built from labeled parts. If you cannot say it three times fast, it is not a goblin name. Here is what goblin names mean, part by part: ten names, each with its build and its tradition. There is no canon to cite here, so every row carries the invented label. That is the honest version.

Can a goblin name be unisex? Yes. The any-gender setting mixes both close pools, and a root-only name like Nub belongs to anyone.

What are goblin last names?

Mostly they do not have them. When a goblin carries a second name, it is a warren name: the scrap-totem of the tunnel crew that raised them. Six builds, all invented and labeled:

Goblin warren names with their builds and lineage senses
Warren nameBuilt fromLineage sense
Boltbiterbolt + biterthe warren that bites bolts
Cognippercog + nipperthe warren that nips cogs
Wiresnagwire + snagthe warren that snatches wire
Sparkgutsspark + gutsthe warren that eats sparks
Sootscampersoot + scamperthe warren that scampers in soot
Rivetratrivet + ratthe warren of rivet rats

For family-name traditions that ARE documented, the halfling name generator carries the homely register.

Why do goblin names clip?

Because a goblin name has to survive being shouted down a tunnel. Published game tables across editions agree on the shape: goblin names run one to three syllables, and most sit at two. There is a practical reading for that. A short name carries across a noisy warren. A long name is a liability when the alarm goes up. The budget below is the one this generator keeps to, and the list page holds every curated entry to two syllables or fewer.

The other rule is sayability. Every seam here passes a filter we can state plainly: reject any join the mouth cannot say three times fast. Triple consonant pileups do not ship. If a draw fights your tongue, swap one chip and keep the rest. That is how you pick the right name from a generator: test the sound, then read the receipt.

Goblin names vs orc names

Same shelf of the fantasy toolkit, different grammar. Goblins snap and tinker. Orcs land hard and earn titles. Neighbors, not rivals:

The orc name generator builds the other tradition, deed names and all.

Rare goblin names

Rare here means uncommon roots, not strange sounds. Four snap roots and a handful of closes are flagged uncommon in the data. They build the same way; they just show up less:

Rare-root goblin names with their builds and meanings

Mizcogmiz + cogmud-larker with a cog

More rare picks sit at the bottom of the goblin names list, receipts attached.

Goblin name generator questions, answered

What is my goblin name?

The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode, set a gender if you want one, generate, and read the receipt. You get a name, its morphemes, and the invented label that tells you exactly what kind of tradition it follows. That is a name you picked with your eyes open.

Is the generator accurate to real goblin naming?

No, and it says so on every draw. Goblins are not a real people, so there is no real tradition to be accurate to. The convention here is invented: snapping consonants plus scrap-metal compounds. It follows the shape of published game tables, which also trend short and clipped. The label never claims otherwise.

Can I get short goblin names only?

Yes. The goblin names list is curated to two syllables or fewer, every entry with its receipt. Generate here for fresh builds, or copy straight from the list when you need a batch fast.

What are female goblin names?

Same grammar, different close. Female-marked draws take the -it, -a and -il diminutives: Grubit, Squeka, Klikil. Male draws take -ik, -o and -ok instead. The roots stay shared, which is the whole gender system.
