How does the orc name generator work?
Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: Tribal two-part for the full name with title, or Single name for the root alone. Set a gender too, if you want one. Press Generate. Tap the receipt: each chip is one part with its meaning, and tapping a chip swaps only that part. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.
Is it free, and is it real? Free, no signup, honest about the labels. The root-plus-epithet convention shows up across published game tables. The roots and deeds in this pool are invented, and the label says so. The full list lives on the orc names page.
How do orc names work?
Grok = strong-arm. The Crusher = the deed that named him. Two parts, two jobs. The root is short, heavy, and easy to shout across a battlefield: one or two beats, mostly stopped consonants.
The epithet is the interesting half. It is not decoration; it is a record. "Skull-taker" says the night raid happened. "Bridge-Burner" says somebody's pursuit ended at the river. Across canons the pattern holds: the deed comes first, the title follows, and the title can be outgrown. That is why a generated name like Mok Skull-taker reads as an orc on first sight: it follows the shape your ear knows from every table that published one. The root-plus-suffix grammar lesson lives on the how elvish names work page, taught on the elvish set.
What is a good orc name?
A good orc name shouts well and receipts better. The root should be one breath. The epithet should name a deed specific enough to picture. Here is what orc names mean, part by part: ten names, each with its build and its tradition. The first seven are generator outputs; the last three are canon glosses, labeled as such.
Orc names with their builds, meanings and traditions| Name | Built from | Meaning | Tradition |

| Kra Iron-fist | kra + earned title | crow-cry; deed: won a wrestling hold against a warhorse | Orc convention (root invented, labeled) |

What are female orc names?
Female orc names take the same roots and the keen suffixes -za, -ga, -ka, -ra. The epithet side is shared: a deed does not check gender.
Female orc names with their builds and meanings| Name | Built from | Meaning |
|---|
| Narza | nar + za | night-eyed and keen |
| Grokka | grok + ka | strong-arm and swift |
| Kraga | kra + ga | crow-cry, steady |
| Zhugra | zhug + ra | thick-blooded and fierce |
| Ghaza | gha + za | snarling and keen |
| Vokka | vok + ka | bellowing and swift |
| Skarra | skar + ra | scar-marked and fierce |
| Lugra | lug + ra | heavy-handed and fierce |
What are male orc names?
Male orc names take the heavy suffixes -ak, -ug, -ag, -ok, -urr. Same grammar, different closing sound:
Male orc names with their builds and meanings| Name | Built from | Meaning |
|---|
| Bruzak | bruz + ak | tusk-strong |
| Thokug | thok + ug | club-blow, savage |
| Skarag | skar + ag | scar-marked and wary |
| Lugok | lug + ok | heavy-handed and sturdy |
| Ghaurr | gha + urr | snarling growler |
| Mokmog | mok + mog | stone-head, loyal |
| Lugak | lug + ak | heavy-handed and strong |
| Thokak | thok + ak | club-blow, strong |
How do female and male orc names differ?
Barely, and that is the honest receipt. The convention does not split strongly by gender: same roots, same epithets. The single-name mode differs only in the final vowel.
Female versus male orc name conventions| Attribute | Female names | Male names |
|---|
| Typical endings | -za, -ga, -ka, -ra | -ak, -ug, -ag, -ok, -urr |
| Typical length | 2 morphemes | 2 morphemes |
| Epithets | shared, earned by deed | shared, earned by deed |
| Examples | Narza, Skarra | Bruzak, Lugak |
Can an orc name be unisex? Yes, most of them. Any root plus any epithet reads either way, and the any-gender setting mixes both suffix pools.
What are orc last names?
They are the epithets, and they are earned, not inherited. Where a dwarf clan name passes down a trade, an orc title dies with its owner unless someone retakes the deed.
Orc epithet surnames with the deeds behind them| Surname | Built from | Deed it records |
|---|
| the Crusher | earned title | broke a shield-wall alone |
| Skull-taker | earned title | counted coup in a night raid |
| Iron-fist | earned title | won a wrestling hold against a warhorse |
| Bridge-Burner | earned title | cut off a pursuit at the crossing |
| Thunder-Voice | earned title | rallied three tribes with one speech |
| Grim-Tooth | earned title | kept fighting with a broken jaw |
For inherited family names instead, the fantasy last name generator runs the hereditary registers.
Epithets as earned titles
The deed comes first; the name follows it. Across canons, orc titles work like battlefield promotions. Something happens, witnesses survive, and a name sticks. Tolkien's Azog carries "the Defiler" for a reason the story keeps. The pattern is older than fantasy: real warrior societies from the Norse to the Plains nations recorded deeds in names, and a man could carry a name he won at twenty for the rest of his life. An orc epithet is that system with the safety off. For a writer, it is a machine that makes backstory visible: you do not write that your orc is patient, you name her Cave-Stalker and let the reader do the math. Every epithet in this pool names a specific, checkable deed. If you cannot picture the deed, the title is decoration, and decoration is what the convention was built to avoid.
Deed classes and the titles they earn| Deed class | What earns it | Example title |
|---|
| Strength | single-combat feats of force | Iron-fist, the Crusher |
| Hunting | raids, tracking, coup counts | Skull-taker, Cave-Stalker |
| Endurance | surviving what should kill | Grim-Tooth, Bone-Gnawer |
| Leadership | rallying, calling, holding | Thunder-Voice, War-Caller |
Orc vs goblin names
Same family of sound, different syllable budget. Goblin names clip shorter and tinker; orc names land heavier and title. The goblin page's sayability filter is the tell: goblins optimize for speed, orcs for weight.
Orc versus goblin naming| Attribute | Orc names | Goblin names |
|---|
| Root shape | heavy stops: g, k, zh, th | snapping consonants: z, k, sk, gr |
| Typical length | 1–2 beats plus a title | 2 clipped beats, no title |
| Second name | earned epithet | scrap-compound surname |
| Examples | Grok the Crusher | Zikbolt, Skabcog |
Neither is better; they suit different camps. Build the tinkers on the goblin name generator page.
Which orcs have names in books?
A short canon list, and it proves the shape. Canon rows carry the canon label; everything else on this page is invented in the same style:
Canon orc name receipts| Name | Source class | Receipt |
|---|
| Azog | Tolkien canon | guttural root, closed syllable; meaning unattested |
| Bolg | Tolkien canon | one beat, one deed behind it; meaning unattested |
| Uglúk | Tolkien canon | the accent mark does not soften the root; meaning unattested |
Orc name generator questions, answered
What is my orc name?
The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode: Tribal two-part for root plus earned title, or Single name. Set a gender if you want one. Press Generate and read the receipt: root, gloss, and the deed behind the epithet. Keep the one that fits.
Is the generator accurate to real orc naming?
The convention is documented; the morphemes are ours. Published game tables agree on the shape: a guttural root, plus an epithet earned by deed. This generator follows that shape. The roots and deeds themselves are invented, and the label says so.
Can I get two-part names only?
Yes. The Tribal two-part pill locks the root-plus-title builds: Grok the Crusher, Nar Skull-taker. The full tables live on the orc names page, all one hundred twenty of them titled.
Do orcs have last names?
The epithet does that job. An orc's second name is not inherited; it is earned by a deed and can change when a bigger deed lands. Where dwarves pass a clan down, orcs pass nothing down: Skull-taker dies with the orc who took the skulls.
