Orc Names

Orc names are earned, not inherited. Grok the Crusher is "strong-arm" plus the deed that broke a shield-wall. Here are names for orcs with their parts on the table: 120 of them, every entry carrying a root, an earned title, and its tradition line.

What are orc names?

Two parts: a guttural root you are born with, an epithet you win. Names bold, glosses italic, tradition labeled. Nothing between the rows. Canon rows carry the canon label; invented roots are labeled invented. Pick the right name by picking the deed first: the title follows the story.

How do orc names work?

Guttural root, earned epithet, space between. Grok (strong-arm) + the Crusher (deed) = Grok the Crusher. The convention is documented across published game tables; the roots and deeds on this page are invented, labeled. The root-plus-suffix grammar lesson lives on the how elvish names work page, taught on the elvish set.

What are orc last names?

The epithet does that job, and it dies with its owner. Six decomposed:

Orc epithet surnames with the deeds behind them
SurnameBuilt fromDeed it records
the Crusherearned titlebroke a shield-wall alone
Skull-takerearned titlecounted coup in a night raid
Iron-fistearned titlewon a wrestling hold against a warhorse
Bridge-Burnerearned titlecut off a pursuit at the crossing
Thunder-Voiceearned titlerallied three tribes with one speech
Grim-Toothearned titlekept fighting with a broken jaw

How do the epithets get earned?

Deed first, name after, witnesses required. Every title on this page maps to a specific, checkable act: a wall broken, a chain bitten through, a horn sounded at the right moment. That specificity is the machine. Real warrior societies worked this way too, from Norse bynames to Plains coup counts, and a warrior could carry a won name for life. An orc title is the same system with the paperwork burned. For a writer the table below is a backstory generator: pick the deed class that fits your character's past, take a title from that row, and the name now encodes something true.

Orc name questions, answered

What is a rare orc name?

Five low-frequency picks, each with its receipt. Gha Iron-Jaw: snarl root, deed: bit through a chain. Skar Ash-Walker: scar-marked root, deed: crossed a burned field no one else would. Bruz Bridge-Burner: tusk root, deed: cut off a pursuit at the crossing. Vok Grim-Tooth: bellow root, deed: kept fighting with a broken jaw. Lug War-Caller: heavy-hand root, deed: sounded the horn at the right moment.

Can orc names be one word?

Yes. The root alone is a complete name. Bolg is canon proof: one beat, one deed behind it. The generator's Single name mode builds them with a closing suffix: Bruzak, Narza. The two-part form simply adds the deed.

What are female orc names?

Same grammar, and the epithet does not check gender. A female orc carries a root and a title the same way: Kra Iron-fist is whoever won that hold. On the single-name side, the keen suffixes are -za, -ga, -ka, -ra: Narza, Kraga, Vokka. Build them in the generator.
