Good anime names do storytelling work in two or three characters. Sixty-four to start, tagged by the register they were built for. Every row shows the kanji, the reading, and what the parts mean. All built from the shared pools, none lifted from any show's cast:

How do anime names work?

Haruto is 陽 (sun) plus 斗 (Big Dipper). That is the whole machine: a meaning-bearing morpheme for a first element, a second element that grounds or extends it, and a register that decides which meaning classes are in play. Leads draw sun, sea, and soaring kanji. Heroines draw flower, snow, and song. Rivals draw swift and exact kanji. Villains draw moon, black, and marsh. The same system names real children in Japan, which is why it reads as natural on the page. The full real-world tradition, readings and surname order included, is documented on the japanese name generator page, and the craft of signaling character through names on how to name a character.

What are anime last names?

Real Japanese surnames, family name first. Writers reach for the same surname stock as the real country, and the kanji do quiet work: a plain surname for a not-plain protagonist, a dark one for the villain. Eight with receipts:

The character-type conventions

Four registers, four signal systems. This is the convention layer anime adds on top of the real Japanese system. It is how a name tells you the role before the first scene:

Anime character-type naming conventions
RegisterKanji familiesSignals before the character speaks
Lead陽 sun, 翔 soar, 輝 shine, 海 seaoptimist, bound upward
Heroine花 flower, 雪 snow, 心 heart, 歌 songgentle, inward strength
Rival駿 swift, 秀 excel, 律 law, 岳 peakdisciplined, measuring
Villain月 moon, 黒 black, 空 void, 澤 marshaloof, self-contained

Codes invite subversion: a sun-named villain hits harder because the name lied. But the subversion only lands when the reader can read the code, and the code is the table above.

Anime names, answered

What are cool anime names?

Cool is compressed meaning plus a clean sound. The names that stick load a whole character into two kanji and still land in the ear: Akatsuki (dawn), Kurotsuki (black moon), Hayabusa (falcon), Ren (lotus). Every row above carries that receipt, so you can judge the cool by the parts.

Are anime names real Japanese names?

Almost all of them, yes. These names are built from real given-name kanji with standard readings, the same pools behind the japanese name generator. Anime writers use the real system too. What anime adds is intent: the characters are picked to signal the role.

What anime names mean moon?

From this page's pools: Tsukiko, Mitsuki, Yuzuki, Tsukioka, Tsukino, and Nozomu (hope plus moon). Each carries 月 tsuki, moon, in a different position with a different partner. The moon alone says quiet distance. What the second kanji adds is the character.
