How do Korean female names work?

The ending syllable does the gender grammar, and the first syllable makes the claim. Seo-yeon is 瑞 (the claim, auspicious) joined to 妍 (the ending, beautiful). Ha-eun is 河 (river) joined to 恩 (grace). The ending supplies the sound the ear expects; the first syllable supplies what the name asserts.

Eight ending families cover the list, from the modern -eun and -rin endings to the classic -hee, -sun and -sook sets that mark the mother and grandmother generations. Read the table and you can date a name within a generation.

Korean girl name questions, answered

What is a popular Korean girl name?

Seo-yeon 서연, Ha-eun 하은, Ji-woo 지우 and Min-seo 민서 lead current birth registries. Each has its hanja receipt in the table above, and the order shifts a little year to year.

What are cute Korean girl names?

The soft-open set: -a and -rin endings, and the native words. Su-a, Ji-a, Ye-rin, Ha-rin, Na-ri, Dan-bi, Sa-rang, A-rin: the cute table above rows eight of them with receipts. Cute in Korean naming is mostly the -a elegance ending and the native vocabulary; nothing here is a baby-talk diminutive.

What are old-fashioned Korean girl names?

The -ja, -sook and -soon sets: Yeong-ja 영자, Mi-ja 미자, Young-sook 영숙, Kyung-soon 경순. They read as a grandmother's name in Korea today, and as a solid older character anywhere else.

Do Korean girls have middle names?

No. One given name, usually two syllables, no middle name. The two-syllable block does the work a first-plus-middle pair does elsewhere: two hanja, two claims, one name.

Names, hanja and meanings are compiled from published hanja and Korean naming references; the commonness order tracks current birth-registry rankings and shifts year to year, re-verified at each refresh.
